One of my absolute favorite pastimes is to peruse the Target sale racks. It doesn’t matter the department, I just love finding quirky bargain finds. My most recent score was a fun Disney shirt in the women’s section. Graphics and licensed tees aren’t my thing, but every now and then, I’ll find something that totally suits me. This time, I found a $3 tee with the phrase so synonymous with the Lion King. With a simple silhouette of Simba holding his head high, following his besties Timon and Pumba, bright yellow block lettering spells out: Hakuna Matata.
Hakuna Matata, what a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata, ain’t no passing craze
It means no worries for the rest of your days
It’s our problem free philosophy,
In the almost 20 years since this movie’s release, I’ve sung this song in different capacities. As a teen, this song meant never take life too seriously. In my twenties, I took it more literal, as in, just don’t worry as much. And now, in my 30s, I comprehend Hakuna Matata to mean: don’t sweat the small stuff. Because really? Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Last week, Josh started with a new speech therapist. She’s optimistic, extremely knowledgable, but best of all, we mesh. I understand her goals and she embraces my worries. She reassured me that Josh’s cognition and ability to comprehend language is developing well. He gets it, which is the most difficult part of language. Though he can only say a handful of words verbally, the kid knows how to convey a message.
The new speech therapist is aiming to work on Josh’s oral motor skills to help build those muscles needed to tackle language and speech. During his latest session with her, he was jabbing away, but even better, he was roaring when they read a book with a lion. The ferocity of the lion is apropos with my fierce dude.
This evening, I picked Josh up after dinner and we “talked” back and forth. Though there were no words exchanged, we always seem to understand each other. He pointed to Simba, Timon and Pumba on my shirt and smirked. It’s as if he already knows that catchy Lion King song, but really, it’s because he lives it.
No worries! Hakuna Matata
